TITLE: The Trash Brick

RECOMMENDED AGE GROUP: 1º ESO (LEVEL 3)

SYNOPSIS

We are in the year 2072 and the whole world is full of different types of residues. They are everywhere and gigantic rats feed on them. Human beings get infected by several types of fatal viruses. One of them is Amelia, a young woman infected by an unknown virus that can be found in garbage. One day, Matt, a young and idealistic scientist, meets Mrs. Mellow, Amelia’s governess. Later, he is introduced to Amelia and they fall in love. He decides to find a solution to store all the garbage and make it disappear so that Amelia can get better. He devises a brick which contains all the garbage in the earth but he needs finance. He asks financial help to Amelia’s uncle Mr. Miser who decides to make financial profit from it applying a faulty layer to the brick which consequently puts the product in danger. Finally one day the brick is sent to space but explodes. Part of the garbage comes down onto Mr. Miser’s house and buries him to death.

CHARACTER OBJECTIVES

Amelia: young but sick beautiful woman, she falls in love with Matt.

Matt: young and idealistic man, he wants to save Amelia.

Mrs. Mellow: old and sweet woman, governess and second mother to Amelia.

Mr. Miser: stingy rich man who wants get money at any risk. He finally gets what he deserves.

Narrator 1: he/she adds a dramatic tone to the whole play.

SCENE BREAKDOWN

SCENE 1: Introduction of the chaotic situation. Characters’ introduction, especially of Amelia and their dramatic situation. All is done by a narrator. For this scene we will need some plastic toy rats and some trash bins and litter on the floor.

SCENE TWO: Matt meets Amelia through Mrs. Mellow and they fall in love. He learns her personal situation and decides he is going to find a cure. They are blessed by Amelia’s governess, Mrs. Mellow. In this scene we will need supermarket bags with products in it to represent Matt and Mrs. Mellow chat in the supermarket. Two chairs, a table and a flower vase with some flowers to represent the meeting at Amelia's home.

SCENE THREE: After much work, Matt devises a solution to the problem: a brick that will contain all the garbage in the world. Now he needs some finance. He goes to see Amelia’s uncle, Mr. Miser, and explains him his product. He offers Matt financial help, but he secretly decides to make more economic profit saving money on the security layer of the system. Here we will need a table and some material lab to represent the scene at Matt’s laboratory.

SCENE FOUR: Finally the day of the launching arrives, all the authorities are there. The brick is launched and supposedly the earth is saved. But suddenly they can hear a big explosion. The brick has exploded due to a faulty building. Mr. Miser runs away in shame and when he gets home he is buried by a piece of the garbage that reaches his house. The explosion will be staged by means of a paper rocket model and a student exploding a balloon.
